Rooftop Solar Energy Potential in Buildings – Financing Models and Policies For the Deployment of Rooftop Solar Energy Systems in Turkey

Approximately one-third of Turkey’s total final energy consumption is from buildings. Rooftop solar PV systems are one of the leading technologies in meeting this demand. Rooftop solar PV systems also reduce the need for grid electricity and contribute to the reduction of distribution losses. Energy consumption of different types of buildings across four climate zones in Turkey and the technical and economic rooftop solar potential to meet the energy demand of buildings are assessed in this report, via investigating unit energy consumption and roof areas. In this study, cost-benefit analysis and the economic and environmental effects of rooftop solar systems are discussed, as well as financing tools, policy mechanisms and business models required for the widespread use of these systems are evaluated.
